An ongoing weekly meal support group for people in Europe struggling with eating disorders and disordered eating and who want support in overcoming food-related fears.

Community
Meal Support Group

Recovery from an eating disorder requires sitting with fears and...

nourishing ourselves.

This is true for all eating disorder diagnoses - anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and avoidant and restrictive food intake disorder - as well as for disordered eating.

When anxiety is high, our natural tendency is to avoid the situation. Meal support provides a calm, compassionate, and supportive environment to do the hard thing, learn distress tolerance, and adequately nourish yourself.

This is the first outpatient meal support group known to us in Europe. Meal support is helpful in transitioning from a clinic environment to a home environment or to build on recovery while in the outpatient setting.  By engaging with this outpatient meal support group, you will learn valuable recovery skills in your own home

How can meal support help you?

Getting support at meals within a community can help you:

  • Overcome food-related fears like eating a fear food or sitting with the fear of choking within a safe environment

  • Receive emotional support

  • Better meet your nutrition needs

  • Reduce post-meal compensatory behaviors like purging or restricting food

  • Learn you can tolerate distress and uncertainty

  • Get support from others and give support to your peers

  • Build tools and skills to reduce food-related anxiety when eating

  • Improve your relationship with food and eating

  • Enhance the effectiveness of care you are getting outside of group

What to expect:

Before the session, you will prepare a meal that is aligned with your recovery goals. This may mean having adequate portions or including a scary food.

During weekly meal support, you can expect sessions to start with a general check in. Throughout the session, we will engage in games and conversation. We will provide encouragement and support to those struggling. We will also be eating and model nourishing eating that is adequate and varied.

After the meal, we will do a check in and discuss next steps for aligning behaviors post-meal with recovery goals. You will receive handouts and resources to use between sessions.
