Summer 2025
Meal & Recovery Support Group
Recovery from an eating disorder requires sitting with fears and...
nourishing our bodies and minds.
This is true for all eating disorder diagnoses - anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and avoidant and restrictive food intake disorder - as well as for disordered eating.
When anxiety is high, our natural tendency is to avoid the situation. Meal support provides a calm, compassionate, and supportive environment to do the hard thing, learn distress tolerance, and adequately nourish yourself.
In addition to meal support, group will include support around recovery topics like body image and embodiment, movement, social comparison, balanced nutrition, self-compassion and letting go of diet culture.
By engaging with this outpatient meal and recovery support group, you will learn valuable recovery skills in your own home while building community.

How can this group help you?
Getting support within a community can help you:
-
Overcome food-related fears like eating a fear food or sitting with the fear of choking within a safe environment
-
Receive emotional support
-
Reduce any post-meal compensatory behaviors like purging or restricting food
-
Learn you can tolerate distress and uncertainty
-
Get support from others and give support to your peers
-
Improve your relationship with food and eating
-
Help you build continued resilience for recovery
-
Enhance the effectiveness of care you are getting outside of group
-
Feel much less alone in the struggle
What to expect:
Before the session, you will prepare a meal that is aligned with your recovery goals. This may mean having adequate portions or including a scary food.
During weekly meal support, you can expect sessions to start with a general check in. While eating, we will engage in games and conversation. We will provide encouragement and support to those struggling.
After the meal, we will do a check in and discuss next steps for aligning behaviors post-meal with recovery goals.
We will then discuss, as a group, a recovery aligned topic. We will connect in a way that allows for all to be heard. We will engage in an exercise together that allows for exploration together and builds your capacity for change.
You will receive handouts and resources to use between sessions.
